Autumn in New England Women's Tour

October 2-8, 2010

As a native New Englander, autumn is one of my favorite seasons. For this trip i have chosen some of my favorites to share with you. We will tread off the typical tourist path to gather the essence of autumn in New England.   Summer memories linger while the spectacle that is autumn slowly and steadily graces the landscape. Serendipity Traveler invites women travelers to join us and experience the beauty of New England's autumn season, visiting the historical city of Boston,  idyllic villages and country roads of Vermont, and the coastal jewel of Rockport in Essex County north of Boston. This trip is a stunning blend for women travelers of city and country, art and architecture ,  country walks, antiques,  covered bridges, and New England autumn foliage at its best. We meander along historical routes, sleep in charming inns,  savour fine New England dining and walk in the Green mountains of southern Vermont and along the Atlantic coast.

Arrive in historic Boston and transfer independently from Logan International Airport to our hotel in the heart of Boston proper. We will take a Boston Duck Tour this afternoon. The ducks are WWII amphibious vehicles that travel over land and sea. We will view Boston's Public Garden, The Common, Old North Church and  Newbury St. before cruising the Charles River. This evening, we gather for a welcome dinner at a colorful Beacon Hill bistro after walking in Back Bay.  D

Put on your walking shoes for your Freedom Trail walk this morning if you choose.  Later, you may wish to explore Boston Common where George Washington's leadership forged American liberty. This afternoon and evening are at your leisure to further discover the cultural sights and sounds in the very heart of Boston, also known as, “Bean Town”.   Perhaps, a visit to the North End,  Beacon Hill, or taking in the art at The Museum of Fine Arts which is one of America's largest museums and is best known for its collections of Impressionist paintings, Egyptian artifacts and Asian art. This evening  you may opt for a cultural performance in the city. B/L

Leaving Boston, you will begin to travel north towards the panoramic, colorful mountains of Vermont.  We will be stopping along the way in Concord, Massachusetts following the trail of Paul Revere where the American Revolution started.  While in Concord, you will delight in a historical, revolutionary and literary walking tour in the village. Following lunch, we will continue our journey toward the quintessential villages of Vermont.  After checking in to our historical New England inn, you may wish to soak in the autumn air and brilliant colors with a walk before dinner to see the nearby covered bridge.   B/L

This morning, we will tour local  Vermont back roads, hills, and idyllic New England villages washed in brilliant colors.  We plan to taste some locally made Vermont cheeses, enjoy a gourmet lunch with fresh pressed apple cider, and visit the Marsh- Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park. Walking through one of Vermont's most beautiful landscapes, under the shade of sugar maples, and 400 year old hemlocks, acrsoss covered bridges and rambling stone walls you will be immersed in the essence of Vermont.  Antique and Artisan shops make shopping fun.  Return to our inn late afternoon as the sun begins to set on the hillsides.   B/D

Winding our way south through landscape of Southern Vermont with the tapestry of colors, you will begin to head toward the Atlantic coast, we will  lunch along the way. We will visit Castle Hill Estate in Ipswich, a grand summer estate where you can begin to breathe the fresh salt air of the Atlantic. We will continue through Essex and arrive in the classic, colonial seaside jewel of Rockport, Massachusetts. After settling in to our 18th century inn, you may wish to stroll the beach, visit the harborfront and watch the lobstermen hauling their traps, or browse the art galleries and interesting shops along Main Street. Winslow Homer and friends were some of the early artists that loved this village by the sea. B/L

Savour the beauty of the Atlantic Ocean this morning before traveling the short distance  to Gloucester, Massachusetts, America's oldest seaport. A private tour at the stunning Cape Ann Museum where our docent will share the region's rich maritime heritage including the arts. We will tour some of the spectacular lighthouses of Cape Ann this afternoon and savour freshly caught lobsters. Upon returning to the coastal village Rockport in the evening, we will share our farewell dinner.   B/D

This morning, you will depart independently for Boston's Logan Airport with your warm memories of New England's rich and colorful autumn tapestry during one of its most glorious of seasons. B
