Shepherd & Sissinghurst

Sometimes it is best to leave your camera in the bag and truly experience the moment. Recently, two examples have come to me to share with you.  On our English Gardens trip, we were exploring Sissinghurst.  After taking lots of photos, one client wandered off to the edge of the property where sheep graze and the pastoral landscape is stunning. While there, the local shepherd came to call the sheep and gather them in as dusk was approaching. The magic of watching the sheepdog and shepherd gather the sheep was beyond words.  If you have ever watched this happen, you know what I mean.  Later that evening at dinner, the traveler was telling us about her wonderful experience.  She had been one to take lots of photos and I asked if she had taken any of the sheep.  No, she replied.  I just wanted to experience the wonderfulness of the moment.  I couldn't agree more.  Sometimes the best camera is our heart as we savour moments precious and wonderful.  No camera could have captured the moment for her the way she alone did.
Then a few days later at home, there was an extraordinary complete rainbow spanning the harbor which I was enjoying with a local photographer.  I urged him to go into his studio and get his camera.  He replied, no.  I want to enjoy this moment.  If I get out my camera, it changes it to work.  He just wanted to experience the colorful rainbow in all of its wonder and beauty.  Sometimes our camera is best left in the bag.
