Atlantic Canada

Walking by the Sea in Nova Scotia

July 18- 24,2009

Women's  Travel to Atlantic Canada 2009

For most of my life I have summered in Atlantic Canada. During the first half spending summers at my Grandmothers on a pristine island in the Bay of Fundy, after which my family resides each summer at our family cottage on the coast of Nova Scotia.  It is with the local knowledge and love of the Maritimes  that Serendipity Traveler will explore the  unspoiled province of Nova Scotia. Refreshing salty air, friendly people ,  Celtic music, rural landscapes, coastal villages, and the UNESCO world heritage town of Lunenburg will leave you with the flavour and richness that is distinct to this untouched land . Our travel will be slow as we take in the essence of heritage, adventure and cultures that abound here. The wonders of the Bay of Fundy and her 40 foot tides, the bucolic Annapolis Valley where artisans produce most of the food we will eat, and the Atlantic Coast where the Lighthouse route leads us to coves, beaches and headlands that you will remember forever. If you are one to wander off the tourist path, join us in Nova Scotia.

You will arrive at Halifax International Airport and transfer to our luxe boutique hotel in the center of the bustling, seaport city of Halifax, Nova Scotia. This afternoon we will enjoy a harbor boat tour departing from the wharfs on the colorful Halifax waterfront. We will get acquainted with the history and landmarks of Halifax as we  discover the essence of this seafaring city.  Tall Ships from around the world  will be in port this weekend which will enhance our time in this vibrant seaport. We will gather together this evening for a welcome dinner at one of the  fine local chef owned restaurants. D

This morning we begin  with a tour of the city of Halifax, visiting Citadel Hill, Pier 21 “Gateway to Canada”, and the Maritime Museum where the Titanic exhibit is located. Art Gallery Nova Scotia is a worthwhile visit this afternoon as you explore the colorful arts scene in Halifax.  This evening is open for your own discoveries  of the city - perhaps a sunset boat trip, a stroll along the waterfront, or hearing some live Celtic music in the pubs.  B/L

Put on your walking shoes this morning and you will take a drive to join the Evangeline Trail, visiting historical Grand Pre and walking the trails in scenic Blomidon Provincial Park, which overlooks the Bay of Fundy, known for the highest tides in the world. Inhale the salty air and savour the sea breezes here. After our walk we will visit the Grand Pre Winery to sample the distinct wines produced in this bucolic valley by the sea.   B/L

This morning we depart Halifax bound for well known Peggys Cove a photographers delight. We then will continue south to Lunenburg  where we settle for the rest of our trip. Accomodations will be in historic and charming bed and breakfasts in the heart of this UNESCO world heritage town.   Before our arrival in Lunenburg, we will visit the Settler’s Museum in the seaside village of Mahone Bay and also the working studios of the Amos Family, where pewter continues to be handcrafted by local artisans on site. If you want to try your chance at kayaking, the waters of Mahone Bay are pure delight on a summer day. B/L

Today, you will experience Lunenburg with a guided  tour of Lunenburg’s historical, “Old Town”, planned in 1754 and well preserved today, followed by our private tour of the recently restored landmark, St. Johns Anglican Church, situated in the distinctive Old Town. This afternoon, you can opt for a whale watch, gallery hopping, boat tour, as we relish the comings and goings of the vibrant Lunenburg waterfront. A treat from some local fiddlers or perhaps a bagpiper may enrich our dinner experience in the town this evening. B/D

This morning you may wish to browse the shops and galleries of the village, visit the interesting Fisheries Museum or the Knaut -Rhuland House. After lunch we will walk the pristine seashore trails south of Lunenburg. We will celebrate our refreshing week by the sea with our farewell dinner this evening at one of the local favorites. B/D

Brimming with salty memories of this colorful, Maritime region you will leave the charms and beauty of Nova Scotia this morning to depart for the Halifax International Airport  and your flights homeward. B
