The Chelsea Flower Show London

img_4587_120The  Royal Horticultural Society will be opening the world renowned Chelsea Flower Show in London May 17, and we will be there. Garden enthusiasts from around the world travel to see the best in plants, garden design and horticulture. Your love of flowers is enough reason to visit Chelsea, and if you are a gardener well then it's gardening heaven.Following are recent notes from The RHS website for Chelsea 2009 of highlights to look forward to;

"Bloms Bulbs is showing 13,000 cut flower tulips with varieties from the 17th century to the present day. Winchester Growers is making a bold statement with a magnificent display of dahlias, while Tynings Climbers offers visitors the chance to see the National Collection of Passiflora (passion flower), normally a summer flowerer, but which they are coaxing to open gloriously in May.

As the plant breeders' favourite place to launch new varieties, visitors also get the first glimpse of many new plants. Look out for four new rose cultivars from David Austin Roses, Iris ‘Broadleigh Fenella' from Broadleigh Gardens and from Hillier Nurseries, Heuchera ‘Tiramisu'.

Designers at this year's show are merging art and gardening to create colourful garden masterpieces.

One of the most provocative and mould-breaking gardens is artist/designer Tony Smith's creation for Quilted Velvet, which is likely to be one of the main talking points of the show. On a different note, the Laurent-Perrier Garden is an Italianate garden for the 21st century. Conceived as a geometric art form in itself, it blurs the boundaries between nature, art and architecture. A monolithic stone wall is textured to resemble a hedge and a 2m (6.5ft) sculpture in pre-rusted steel explores the relationship between geometry and landscape.

Sculpture is also a key feature in The Cancer Research UK Garden. At its epicentre is a piece by Simon Thomas that appears to have crashed into a reflecting pool. The shockwaves ripple out into the garden, radiating across and from the water and spilling onto the paving and lawn."

I like passion flowers and will try to get some photos of The National Collection of Passiflora to post here. The poppy photo is one i took last year at Wisley Gardens.

If you missed traveling to England with us this spring, please look forward to 2010. Dates will be posted in early June and The Chelsea Flower Show will be spectacular once more!
