Sitting

"Sometimes I sits and thinks and sometimes I just sits."  I first saw these words on a poster in the Caribbean.  I liked it and could envision the Caribbean Mama who perhaps scribbled it down amidst her flock of children attempting some quiet moments just for her. I urge you to take time to "just sit" when traveling.  Find a park bench or a café table or a hotel lobby and just sit.  As you settle in, you will begin to immerse all your senses in the sights, sounds, fashion, colors, and languages of your environment.  Stop and look around without going anywhere.  Take in what you see.  Perhaps it's a piece art or 3 generations walking together, flowers, music, fashion, faces, noises, architecture, textures or patterns. Whatever you gather in your sitting time will become one of your cherished experiences as sitting is something that draws the world to you.  One of my favorite moments of sitting was on a bench at the Sissinghurst Castle Garden.  I can still see vividly the pastoral landscape which had captured me.  Another fun sitting story came from just sitting on a bench in Boston Common where a city friend who never takes that path on her way home from work discovered me sitting there.  You never know how sitting still will add to your collection of moments and memories.  Over the years, the wisdom of that folk saying I saw in the Caribbean has reaped plentiful visions and many pleasant memories.
