Islands

I love islands. There is something beyond magical when you take a ferry or fly to an island where the rhythm of the sea is integral to the way of life.  As a child I had the fortune of an island heritage.  My Dad grew up on an island in the Canadian Maritimes. The tides were and still are the clock on this magical outpost.  Each summer I visited my grandmother's house on the island and traveling by ferry was among the best of my childhood adventures.  My love of islands around the world percolates naturally from my earliest of days.  The islands I am listing here are as diverse as they are enchanting.  Each island retains its rugged individuality.  Once on Nantucket we joined in conversation with a couple who were celebrating a 50^th birthday by visiting 50 islands.  Indeed a pair of Doers and Dreamers.

Here is my short list of ten favorite islands to experience:

1. Cape Breton Island, Canada
2. Magdalene Islands, Canada
3. Monhegan Island, Maine
4. Bermuda
5. St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands
6. Dominica, West Indies
7. Molokai, Hawaii
8. South & North Island, N.Z.
9. Bali
10. Ko Phi Phi, Thailand
