Big Sur’s Allure

Big Sur is a world apart unlike any other and that is what makes Big Sur impossible to describe.  Big Sur is as much a spirit as a place.  Artists, writers, dreamers, naturalists, photographers (known and lesser known) have chosen chapters there.  The light is exceptional, the pace is artful and the spirit is full of daily California Dreaming.  The seductive playfulness of the hills meeting the sea and the azure sky in a relationship with the restless Pacific mesmerize the unsuspecting visitor and local alike.  Long ago, conversing with a local who had lived in Big Sur for decades, I learned about the less traveled Old Highway and was shown with a rough drawn sketched map how to find the disguised dirt road which rises above the crest of the hills and the infamous Pacific Coast Highway 1.  The old road is muddy, twisty.  He said. "If it's raining, you better not go on it."  Well, it wasn't raining the next morning so off I turned onto a single lane less traveled road that took me further into the essence of the heart of Big Sur.  Big Sur exudes community and spirited independence interwoven.  My back road adventure on the less traveled Old Highway is one I have not forgotten.  Our trip to California is a wonderful chance to get a glimpse of this place called Big Sur.  You will wander her beaches, sip wine overlooking the Pacific and, perhaps, meander a Redwood trail as you are unknowingly seduced by Big Sur California
